What is Flex for?/When does a dog need Flex?

Flex is used to reduce pain and discomfort, to improve joint movement and to reduce lameness. This applies mainly but not exclusively to the limb joints. The spinal column and other parts of the skeletal frame and even soft tissue damage may show improvement. Equally Flex may be given as a preventative to maintain a dog in peak condition and to reduce the effects of long term wear and tear.Flex  has been used successfully in the following situations: In the long term management of hip and elbow dysplasia. Injury to limb joints as a result of accident or exertion. Lameness of a non specific nature where the cause is unknown Onset of arthritis (not necessarily prematurely). Especially active dogs have benefited and enjoyed extended working lives.

How soon should an effect be seen?

Owners have reported visible and sometimes dramatic improvement within 2-3 days.  Naturally this is not always the case, and so a more realistic timeframe is a few weeks and results should ordinarily be reviewed after a month. Often, an initial loading dose (double the amount for the first week) can be given to reduce visible symptoms more quickly.

How should Flex be fed?

How should Flex be fed? - refer to the feeding page Flex sprinkle granules are simply sprinkled over your dogs food. They can be mixed in if necessary or dry food can be moistened. We provide a scoop with each pack to help you measure the right amount. Flex tablets are both small and highly palatable and most dogs will enjoy them as a treat. They can be given at any time. It is often convenient to incorporate them with regular feeding.

How much should I feed?

The amount to feed will depend on the condition of your dog. Ranging from a maintenance dose for dogs whose symptoms have subsided through to a double dose for dogs in visible discomfort. We recommend you visit the "feeding" section by clicking on "feeding" on the menu bar near the top of this page

What does it cost to use?

Flex Sprinkle costs less than similar competitive products because it contains over 80% active ingredients. It is therefore highly concentrated and very economical to use. Because Flex Sprinkle contains considerably more green lipped mussel extract than other products it can be fed at a reduced economy level to dogs with reduced symptoms or as a maintenance feed. Flex sprinkle fed at the full level and delivering more green lipped mussel than any other system can cost as little as 35p/day for a large dog, 17p/day for a medium dog, and only 9p/day for a small dog.

How long should a dog stay on Flex?

The vast majority of owners prefer to feed Flex regularly because they value its contibution to long term joint-care.In cases where a specific injury is being treated then feeding may only be of shorter term duration. Continue feeding after improvement is seen to allow the healing to be completed. When used as a preventative or treatment for arthritic dogs then there is absolutely no harm in long term feeding as all the ingredients in Flex have a strong natural pedigree.

Why isn’t there any glucosamine for dogs in your product?

We don’t add glucosamine or chondroitin because Green Lipped Mussel  is a strong natural source of these building blocks already. We prefer to add other ingredients instead such as Seleniun, Zinc and Vitamins E and C.

Why is your product different to other glucosamine for dogs products?

We believe that the natural constituents of green lipped mussel combined with additional anti-oxidants far outweigh the effectiveness of typical glucosamine based products. The anti-inflammatory properties are greatly superior and the natural sources of glucosamine and chondroitin are more easily assimilated.

Is your green lipped mussel as strong as others?

In a nutshell - yes, its stronger!. Flex Sprinkle green lipped mussel extract contains high natural anti-inflammatory activity. Every production batch is tested/verified by the Bioactivity Investigation Group, University of Otago. Flex Sprinkle Green Lipped Mussels are only sourced from EU/USFDA approved growing areas located in the Marlborough Sounds, (Top of the South Island of New Zealand). Prior to harvesting our  suppliers fully inspect the Green Lipped Mussel quality ensuring that only the highest quality Green Lipped Mussels are selected and harvested. These strict control measures guarantee that the live mussels contain the highest levels of Glycosaminoglycans GAG and Omega-3-fatty acid contents. Flex Sprinkle Green Lipped Mussels are freeze dried at controlled low temperatures resulting in high anti-inflammatory activity. Low temperature controls are achieved throughout the entire freeze drying process ensuring the Flex Sprinkle components are kept at premium high levels. Flex Sprinkle is stabilized with a unique anti-oxidant ensuring maximum anti-inflammatory activity for long periods. Some mussel powders (eg. defatted, delipidated mussel powder) can oxidize resulting in low anti-inflammatory activity, other mussel powders are sold without any scientific backing. This is why stabilized Flex Sprinkle Mussel Powder is a reputable brand.

Is your green lipped mussel freeze dried?

Yes it is, absolutely all green lipped mussel extracts are either freeze dried or spray dried. We prefer freeze drying because no heat that could degrade the extract is used. If you want to see how good our quality is then follow the link to our press release about the quality of Flex green lipped mussel for dogs.

How much green lipped mussel is in your product?

Flex sprinkle contains 70% cold extracted and processed green lipped mussel extract by weight. This means 700 mg per gram or 700 mg for every 15kg of your dog’s bodyweight. This is more than any other brand and  approximately 50% more green lipped mussel than most other products.

Can I feed other joint care products at the same time ?

Yes, Vets frequently recommend the addition of green lipped mussel to the diet in conjunction with prescription pain killers. See our press release. Ther is clear evidence that it reduces the dangerous side effects to the gastrointestinal tract and the kidneys

Frequently Asked Questions About Flex Sprinkle

Why do Vets  recommend Green Lipped Mussel extract for dogs?

The reason is because green-lipped mussel is increasingly being recognised as a natural maintenance for joint health and which at the same time provides long term nourishment.  Joint and cartilage function is supported and the production of synovial joint fluid for lubrication is encouraged.

For hundreds of years the coastal Maoris of New Zealand have eaten Green Lipped Mussels as a major part of their diet. The Maoris would harvest the mussels growing naturally on the seashores and would eat them raw. Even though they saw the mussel as an important part of their diet, they did not realise the benefits they were gaining, until settlers in New Zealand later realised that these Maoris had far superior joint health compared to Westerners.

Veterinary surgeons often now promote the addition to the diet of green-lipped mussel as a means  of long-term maintenance of joint health.

Why do our dogs need joint supplements?

Dogs are a species whom we increasingly realise may need additional nutrients to maintain optimum joint and limb health; larger breeds even more so. The increasing use of dogs in sport and leisure activities such as Agility, Flyball, Cannicross, Dog Sledding and  Field Sports is another factor that increases long term wear and tear on the joints.

How do you know if your dog is a likely candidate for joint supplementation and could use green lipped mussel extract for dogs? Perhaps you have simply noticed for yourself an uncharacteristic lack of enthusiasm for exercise, stiffness after rest, awkwardness mounting steps or jumping into the car.  It really makes no difference if your aspirations were to shine in the breed ring, at obedience or agility or simply to enjoy a naturally active life-style with your pet - no doubt you will be looking around for the best way to keep him as comfortable as possible for as long as possible. Remember though that dogs  do still need exercise, not so much as to cause an excess amount of wear and tear but sufficient to keep muscles toned so that they can work to support the joints.

Have you pinned all your hopes and dreams, invested time and money in your choice of dog only to be told by the vet that he needs invasive joint surgery followed by short term relief to help in the recovery process or, worst case scenario, will suffer joint problems for the rest of their life?

What’s The Science Behind Green Lipped Mussel In Dogs?

A History of Green Lipped Mussel in Humans

For hundreds of years the coastal Maoris of New Zealand have eaten Green Lipped Mussels as a major part of their diet. The Maoris would harvest the mussels growing naturally on the seashores and would eat them raw. Even though they saw the mussel as an important part of their diet, they did not realise the benefits they were gaining, until settlers in New Zealand later realised that these Maoris had far superior joint health compared to Westerners.

This mussel is known scientifically as 'Perna canaliculus'. It provides an excellent natural source of glucosamine, chondroitin, vitamins, minerals, amino acids and extremely valuable Omega-3 fatty acids.

What’s in Green Lipped Mussel that helps dogs?

Unique Omega 3 Fatty Acid - ETA

The Green Lipped Mussel possesses a profile of Omega-3 essential fatty acids which is unique . No other marine or vegetable sources contain anything like as much beneficial Omega 3 oils. Most sources of Poly-unsaturated fatty acids (eg fish oils, flax oil etc) are a mixture of  Omega 3 and Omega 6 oils. The balance between the amount of Omega 3 and 6 consumed is vital because Omega 6 oils can increase inflammation. Our Flex  Green Lipped Mussel extract is rich in Omega 3 oils providing up to 200 times as much per milligram as fish and vegetable oils.

Natural Glucosamine and Chondroitin

Flex Jointcare provides a rich source of all major classes of Glycosaminoglycans (GAGS) which are principle components of cartilage and the synovial fluid found in the joint. These GAGS provide flexibility, elasticity and tensile strength to the articular cartilage.

Good joint health can depend on promoting  GAGS content within the joint and surrounding cartilage. As a source of GAGS, Green Lipped Mussel can provide chondrocytes with Chondroitin Sulphate and essential fatty acids which are critical for maintaining joint health.

A  complete joint care formula

Flex Jointcare is the complete joint-care product as it is well balanced with Chondroitin Sulphates 4 and 6, chelated minerals, Glycosaminoglycan GAGS, amino acids and essential fatty acids which together give a synergistic effect that promotes healthy cartilage and provides shock absorbing properties to the joint.

Natural ingredients are more easily absorbed

The natural polysaccharides glucosamine and chondroitin, the 'building blocks' of joint tissue in Green Lipped Mussel, are far more effectively assimilated than manufactured glucosamine and chondroitin.

Flex Jointcare in both tablet and sprinkle form provides two additional anti-oxidant packs :-Selenium /Vitamin E and Zinc/Vitamin C. These are both synergistic combinations that have been scientifically linked to joint health.

Flex contains Selenium (in the form of selenium yeast which is more easily absorbed) and Vitamin E: both are anti-oxidants that have been scientifically associated with helping to maintain healthy joints.  Selenium, in particular, is potentially deficient in cereal based dog foods because of the low levels of Selenium in European soils.

The use of a  supplement to maintain good hip & elbow joint health is recommended; especially in medium and larger breed dogs. Flex Sprinkle has a wide usage in supporting healthy hips or elbows in all breeds.

The natural glycoaminoglycans, vitamins and trace minerals all assist in helping your dog’s hips and elbows by supporting the joint and providing  the specialist nutrition required.

How Can I Help My Dog’s Poor Hips Or Elbows?

Stiff joints don’t discriminate. They affect not only people of all ages, but also  our furry friends, too. If you’re a dog-owner, you want your buddy to eat well, look bright-eyed and playful, and greet you as only a doggy can when you come home. A healthy diet and exercise to help maintain proper weight are the primary ways to help your dog’s stiff joints. A joint supplement such as FLEX jointcare is a really great way too compliment this.

All the active ingredients used in FLEX jointcare have been clinically proven to support dog joint health in numerous scientific studies. We do not add unproven ingredients just because someone else may offer them. All the ingredients in FLEX have been carefully selected, based on the results of research that prove their beneficial effects on the health of your dog's joints.

How Do I Help My Dog’s Stiff Joints?

As your dog grows into middle and then older age you can expect that life will take its toll on his joints. This is a time whern extra help from supplementation may improve his enjoyment and quality of life.

The production of common compounds that we associate with joint care (Glucosamine, Chondroitin and Hyalauric Acid etc) known as GAG’s (glycoaminoglycans !!) reduces in older and elderly dogs.

These older dogs therefore become more susceptible to joint problems ranging from just stiffness after exercise, - to more serious issues.

Joint care and mobility in elderly dogs

GAG’s  are present in the connective tissues such as  cartilage, tendons and ligaments. Some types of  GAGs attract water molecules, providing cartilage with extra shock absorption properties.

They also have negative electrical charges so the GAG molecules tend to repel each other, imparting a degree of resilience and further protection against trauma and physical shock.

Supplements like Flex are rich in these nutrients and can compensate for your elderly dogs increasing need for them.

Flex Sprinkle is a concentrated granule that is fed with your dog’s normal food.

Each pot of Sprinkle contains a scoop that will measure 1300mg of granules, or if you prefer you can use a level small teaspoon instead of the measure, the amount isn’t too critical. There are 38 scoops in the 50 gm pot and 192 scoops in the 250gm tub
