Working Season For Gun Dogs

Working Season For Gun Dogs

As the working season for gun dogs’ approaches, owners and handlers will be preparing for the challenges ahead.

For dogs, this isn’t a gentle walk in the woods, more of a mental and physical workout requiring dedication and commitment from the handler and willingness to work, patience, and stamina from the dog.  The dog’s role can be dedicated or varied, beating, picking up, peg dogs, or being an all-rounder, but preparation is key to ensuring an enjoyable season.

Many gun dogs have an off season. For some, it is a chance to enjoy the challenge of other disciplines, tests, and scurries. Others revert to being pets out of season and then a single-minded gun dog in the zone on their first day out.

Whatever the dog’s pattern, preparing them mentally and physically for the season is important to avoid injury, build resilience, and enjoy a successful working partnership.  A mix of different exercise styles, speeds, and durations helps build cardiovascular strength and muscle.

A day working can be exhausting for a dog, as they’re not programmed to give in, sometimes leading to lack of concentration, injury, and overheating.  A high-quality diet with the right balance of protein, carbohydrates, and fats will support your dog’s energy levels and overall stamina. On busy days, extra calories may be required, especially if it’s cold. Traditionally this might have been a spare sausage roll or the end of a sandwich, every handler will have their own way; just avoid chocolate and always make sure there’s water available.
